How to fix PS5 controller stick drift without opening it

Most DualSense drift can be fixed in five minutes with a USB cable and a browser, no screwdriver and no contact cleaner. This page measures your controller, recalibrates it if it makes sense, and tells you honestly when it does not.

Connect your DualSense over USB to measure and fix it

Over a USB cable. Gives access to the touchpad, the mute button and the controller's raw values. Chrome, Edge and Opera only.

DualShock 4 and DualSense Edge work too. Xbox controller drifting? See the Xbox controller test: it cannot be recalibrated from the browser, but it can be measured.

🔒 Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on any server.

Step by step: fix DualSense drift in the browser

  1. 1Measure it

Connect over USB, run the 10-second drift test in the Sticks tab. Note the resting deviation for each stick.

  2. 2Decide with the number

Under 2 %: no drift, look elsewhere (game dead zone, a second controller). 2–8 %: calibrate. Above 8 %: calibration is a patch, see below.

  3. 3Recalibrate the centre

Calibration tab → “Calibrate centre”. Follow the wizard, then “Save changes permanently”.

  4. 4Measure again

Run the drift test once more. A successful calibration brings the deviation under 1 %. If it does not, the sensor is worn.

Why a PS5 controller drifts

The DualSense sticks use potentiometers: a wiper sliding over a resistive track. With use the track wears and the resting resistance shifts, so the controller reports a small movement even when the stick is centred. Sony's own calibration table, written at the factory, no longer matches the physical part. Two other causes look the same but are not sensor wear: dust or debris under the stick that keeps it from returning to centre, and a worn spring or cap that leaves the stick slightly tilted.

What Sony's “reset” and the PS5 settings actually do

Two things are often recommended online and rarely help with drift. The reset button on the back of the DualSense clears the pairing and restarts the firmware; it does not touch the stick calibration. The PS5 controller settings let you change vibration, trigger intensity and, in some games, the dead zone; there is no system-level stick calibration. The only way to rewrite the calibration without a service centre is a USB cable and a WebHID tool like this one.

Frequently asked questions

Can PS5 stick drift be fixed permanently?

Only by replacing the stick module, ideally with a Hall effect one that does not wear the same way. Calibration and cleaning are effective but temporary fixes for light wear.

Does the reset button on the DualSense fix drift?

No. It clears the pairing and restarts the firmware, but it does not touch the stick calibration table.

How long does a calibration last?

On a stick with 2–5 % deviation, typically months. If it drifts again within weeks, the sensor is worn and calibration is no longer the fix.

Can I fix drift on the PS5 itself, without a PC?

Only by raising the dead zone in games that offer the setting. Rewriting the calibration needs a computer with Chrome, Edge or Opera and a USB cable.

Is it safe to calibrate my controller from a website?

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Changes are temporary until you save them, and “Restart the controller” discards anything unsaved. The write commands come from the open-source dualshock-tools project.
